MANAGEMENT LESSONS FROM WINTER OLYMPICS
As the Olympics wind up, I find myself reflecting back especially on Shaun White’s amazing performance. When he won his well-deserved half-pipe gold in Vancouver under a blizzard of media coverage, even a sober academic like me was jumping up and down, watching the excitement on television. It strikes me now that the business and academic communities can learn powerful lessons from this young Olympian.
In Shaun, a restless spirit that seeks to create its own destiny, not by settling for “good enough,” but by being the best ever.
Let’s examine the management lessons:
Ambition. Successful organizations sometimes become complacent, and, over time, they decay. Remember Polaroid? Shaun didn’t rest on his laurels after he won the gold. He set himself a nearly impossible goal — a perfect score — similar to JFK’s ambition to put a “man on the moon.” When White didn’t have to, he tried a double McTwist 1260. Why is a huge ambition important? Because the thought of climbing a mountain lifts us up in a way the idea of scaling a molehill does not. Does your organization have a huge ambition?
Passion. Obviously, Shaun loves what he does. When you love your work, excellence isn’t an afterthought, it is the only thought. Is your organization passionate about its purpose?
Results. Shaun’s obsession is based on results. He invests the time to create new moves that set a new standard. Does your organization focus on results and doing what it takes to create them?
Innovation. Shaun is an entrepreneur and innovator par excellence. He constantly pushes the boundary and invents new tricks. For him, innovation isn’t a luxury, it’s a way of life. Is innovation part of your organization’s DNA?
Talent. At an early age, Shaun’s talent was recognized by one of his sponsors. He turned pro at 13, before the Olympics even had a snowboarding event. Does your organization pursue talent, attract it and nurture it?
Humility. Even while soaring high on achievement and adulation, Shaun has kept himself grounded, surrounded by family and close friends. The more humble you are, the more you know what you don’t know; you seek to learn. Is yours a learning organization?
Mind-set. This is as important as ability. Shaun exemplifies this, as evidenced in his recent backstage interview on Oprah:
“I wish I could say it was really intense training but it’s a lot of mental preparation. A lot of my sport has to do with mentally being ready to do these tricks and convincing yourself it’s okay.”
Does your organization have the right mind-set for excellence?
America didn’t achieve greatness by tucking in its shirttails or by taking the safe road. This nation wasn’t built by bean counters, insurance companies, or financial institutions. It was built through an unquenchable thirst for innovation. Sure, we praise Steve Jobs and the lads at Google, but we need more of them.
Where are the Shaun Whites to tackle health care or the green challenge?
Politicians and business leaders, it’s your turn. Where you will be in 2020?

ARE WE ON OUR MISSION?
Can you recall DR. A.P.J KALAM’s first mission of “Pruthiv” missile to make India independent in the area of self defense? Can you recall seeing the first Apollo moon-landing?
Both are magnificent accomplishments and the achievement is unparallel.
We all need mission in the life. Then only we can find ourselves engaged in totality. When our 100 percent starts coming out, we feel that we are unleashing our potentiality. We first need focus, and then the dream, the vision, the strategy, and the action plan are unfolded.
You cannot predict what will be the fruit of your mission. Achievement of mission is also unexpected in any hour of the day.
In case of our “Pruthiv” missile we came to know about our strength and our competency. In case of moon, we came to know how it looks from the moon. We knew before that how the earth looks from the moon.
Flying space shuttle Rakesh Sharma, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked him, “How India does look from the space and the answer was “Saara jaha se aacha Hindustan hamara….”
We all are learners; we learned that envisioning the big picture of the life, which help us in developing the plan, the team, the strategy and the goals and much more….
Anthony Robbins define mission properly “A sense of purpose that lures you in to your future. It enlightens your principles, your energy, your values and your goals.”
When you start living with your mission you start living with joy, satisfaction, pleasure and fun. Trust me you will forget your most of the daily routines also. Your eyes will be on the mission only.
Michelangelo said, “They do it day after day, and they thoroughly enjoy it, you can too.”
DO YOU HAVE A MOMENT TO THINK FOR HAPPINESS

Dr. Shailesh Thaker - Business Coach India
The complete world is running after happiness without understanding happiness. How to be happy that lesson is not taught in schools/colleges. We are not aware of happiness nor have we tried to understand deeply, what is happiness? If happiness is just lying in money only then why small children of laborers and people who all are living under poverty line are found to be full of joy, laughing heartily and living the life to its fullest. If happiness is lying in money then why has monk sold his Ferrari?
Is Happiness a monetary success? Is it only a physical world?
Money cannot make you happy. Money can create comfort level for you. A very high level of comfort and luxury can be managed by money but money cannot make you happy.
Money is not the final destination, of course, one o f the key factors to reach to the final destination of happiness.
But, what is happiness except the simple harmony between a man and the life he leads? You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. We should never direct ourselves towards happiness because happiness is never a final destination.

Leadership is showing wisdom. You can buy brain but you cannot buy wisdom. You may come across great skill or knowledge worker or talent master. But, if they are without wisdom, what will happen to Leadership???
I doubt for results!!!
World fails to create a university where wisdom is imparted. Wisdom is never a part of business school. Trust me, you must have crossed an entrepreneur, who is the first class industrialist and third class graduate.
WHAT IS COMMON BETWEEN BILL GATES, BEATLES GROUP AND MUSICIAN
Preparation and practice have impact in life. In music, 6 years old child does practice of 9 hours in a week. At the age of 14, they usually practice for 16 hours. This remains and continues up to the age of 23 years.
As per the research, at the age of 20, a musician has practised for 10,000 hours on one instrument. Comparatively, better musicians have practised for 6000 hours as per the weekly practising hours on one instrument.
These practices and preparations make them class-one musician.

FAILURE: TOLERATE, CELEBRATE AND REWARD
Samuel Beckett said, “Fail, Fail again, Fail better.” Failure is never an end but quitting for lifetime is a permanent failure. Failure is not your failure but it is a feedback to your efforts and you have not received the result which was planned.
Your expectations have been proved wrong, not you.
Average failure hardly produces excellent lessons. Master lessons are produce by excellent failure. Average success hardly creates impact in the life and society.
Failure develops tolerate and built up strong mind, nearly complete mind. Mentor, most of the time, demonstrates a complete mind.
Failure makes you stronger from within. Ability to face today in any uneven condition should be at the optimum level. Failure creates ground nut reality and that vision helps you in leading for tomorrow.
Failure has little value but not rising up again after failure, I mean permanent failure is really miserable and pity fool. SAD BUT TRUE.
Can I have advantage from failure? Can I reward for master failure? Reward your excellent failure so you can become stronger and learn lessons for tomorrow. Failure directs you with vision for better tomorrow. Failure can be celebrated because it has given you lessons and refined you for excellent tomorrow. Isn’t great!!!!
As New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg aptly put it: “In business, you reward people for taking risks. When it doesn’t work out you promote them—because they were willing to try new things. If people tell me they skied all day and never fell down, I tell them to try a different mountain.”
FAILING PERMANENTLY IS A REAL DISASTER.
