Interview on Leadership by Shailesh Thaker at Publicservice UK

Dr. Shailesh Thaker - Management Guru India
A world renowned human potentialist, HR guru and management educator Dr Shailesh Thaker believes that leadership is demonstration, not definition. His specialist talents include mind management, professional development, managerial effectiveness, creativity and creative problem solving. Here, he answers 10 questions about his career so far.
How did your career begin?
My career began in September 1989. I had a training workshop at Surat, Gujarat in India called ‘Train the trainer’; a tough three day programme since there were a lot of us and we had to work through the day and night. The programme transformed me, however, and gave me the direction to make a career as a HR guru.
What are your greatest inspirations?
My greatest inspirations are Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Ghandi. My personal mission statement is: “To inspire people and to help them to identify and enhance their potential so that they can achieve the goals of their life.”
What is your philosophy on life?
My philosophy on life is to live in the present. The past never equals the future and each day is a new challenge.
In your opinion how can we underpin success?
Success depends on passion. You have to be passionate about your work, love your work and work with love.
What is your vision for world success and prosperity?
It is a way of life. The world should focus on new horizons and not be limited by the constraints of every day life. The distance between rich and poor creates a lot of problems for humanity and we should aim to achieve greater balance to prevent this. The world needs to be balanced but this should not compromise the goals of success and prosperity.
What are the determining links between time and purpose?
Time is used in different contexts in different parts of the world so I think one should focus on the present and give 100% to every moment, and every year one should compare and contrast with previous years. I think that can make every moment more meaningful.
You are recognised the world over. Who recognised you first, yourself or others?
The key to success is knowing you can do it. I recognised myself first then gradually other people came to recognise my potential and supported my goals. Confidence is key to the whole success equation.
To what extent does success depend on others?
Success is more connected with yourself than others. There are things within your control that you need to control. There are obviously things beyond your control such as governments, organisations and time that can hinder your progress, so what you should focus on is your internal resources. Leadership is inside-outside, it is the ability to project that which is most important, but also that you project what is inside you. One should focus internally, and then externally everything will fall into place.
How should leadership be measured?
Leadership should be looked at as 360 degrees; and travelling in both directions. It is a circle of trust. Trust yourself and others and in turn others will trust you; this is the foundation of leadership and success.
Which matters most: inspiration or perspiration?
Knowledge is the basic inspiration for everybody. One learns and then one applies. The application of the knowledge requires work. Application of knowledge is where the success lies. If the knowledge is not applied, then it is useless. So it is both inspiration and perspiration that matter.

WILLINGNESS TO DESTROY IS THE ESSENCE OF LEADERSHIP
Leaders are always on the verge of willingness to destroy whatever exists. An organization is created after 20 years of massive legal efforts but if it is destroyed overnight, never mind. With the same zeal and passion create a new organization and set an example in front of the world that you are tough to be destroyed. You have helped somebody for years in every walk of the life and overnight he becomes your enemy, still never mind. Do not lose your ethics and principles just spur yourself and create another friend. You have been honest for the years and to your astonishment, a lot of them have turned dishonest to you. Then also never allow the hatred to make room in your heart, just forget it and never mind. Let morality be your compass and lead your life with honesty. You have trusted relationship but the other party has shown dishonesty in the relationship and broke your intense trust, still never mind, and be honest in your relationship.
You valued organization, relationship, or values for decades and somebody at the spur of the moment destroyed it without your concern, never mind, and CREATE A NEW ONE.
People who forgive and forget bygones will surely rise up in their relationship or organization very powerfully. You will notice that your intensity and speed will be higher than the early organization or relationship. Even your values will become very strong.
Quitting is very easy. Destroying too is very easy. However, coming back is very tough and hard job. Once you come back and rise up, you will reach to newer heights. It makes you even stronger. Nobody will able to shake your foundation of principles but will become very strong.
My experience in meetings, sessions and sharing views with people, has always backed, sounded and supported these beliefs. I encouraged people to work on this principle and experience the difference in life.
Creating, inventing or innovating new things is very tough but the great people always do these tough things and live by their ethics while being attached with very hard goals, isn’t it. Therefore, a person should be willing to destroy his past bitter experiences and evolve as a leader and this in the true sense is the essence of leadership.

ONE STEP IN TOMORROW’S JOURNEY
People are busy in today’s success, today’s failure; today’s urgent and important and stuck of in today. (Hardly few are able to focus on future)
I do agree, life is present. Life is only this moment. Life is living in present. (As there is no guarantee of tomorrow.)
People have to give 100 percentages to the present. Be focus, be involved, be sincere and be action oriented.
But people have to focus on tomorrow. People have to live in tomorrow. Meet any financial expert, he will advice for future planning.
- Future Corporate Leadership Training
People have to spare some moments of a day for tomorrow, everyday. Be clear about your future, be passionate, and be confident for the tomorrow.
I would like to emphasis on focus for future. Everyday spare few moments for the future. Smart people understand it and work accordingly. People understand the importance of long term goals and they do focus on the tomorrow.
WHAT IS MY FOCUS FOR THE NEW COMMING YEAR 2009?
Answer of this question can be a turning point of the life. Leaders lead themselves on the fast track and passengers traveling on abroad of fast track are equip with tool “focus for future”. Every day they act on it.

REWARD SUCCESS AND FAILURE EQUALLY
- Shailesh Thaker - Management Guru India
Failure free life is an illusion. No life is free from failure. Right now, USA, UK and Germany are facing economical crisis (as per the media report). Most of the business houses are stuck of and starry.
If nothing ever breaks, you do not know how really strong it is.
Accepting any feedback as a final failure is a biggest issue, in my eyes. Strike out, Pull out and prove your worth.
Always punish mediocre success and failure. You learnt less from it. Leaders are living with learning attitude.
Failure is nothing but a feedback of your actions. To be fail for life time is a failure.
In fact, when we come out from failure, we are more groomed, mature, strong and rosy. I believe strongly that failure makes us more better and lead us to improvement (None is perfect).
